Atlee SLAMS Kapil Sharma for racist comments; Jawan director says, “We shouldn’t judge people by their appearance but…”

Kapil Sharma made a joke about the appearance of Atlee during a recent episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show, which did not sit well with the filmmaker. Atlee was on the show to promote his upcoming film Baby John, but he seemed visibly upset when Sharma cracked a racially charged joke about his looks.

In response, Atlee encouraged Kapil Sharma to focus on one’s heart rather than their appearance on the show. “In a way, I understood your question, so I’ll try to respond. I’m very grateful to AR Murugadoss sir, who produced my first film. When he asked for a script, he didn’t focus on how I looked or whether I was capable—he appreciated my narration instead. The world needs to see that; we shouldn’t judge people by appearances, but by their heart, they should be judged,” Atlee stated.

Later in the episode, Kapil also jokingly commented on Archana Puran Singh, saying, “Her name is Archana Puran Singh because she is a great admirer of Daku Mohan Singh. There was a man in his gang that inspired her name.” However, Atlee interjected, emphasizing that Archana is a ‘saviour’ for him on the show. “Don’t make fun of her; she is the only saviour of the show for me. Whenever she laughs, I laugh along because I’m waiting for her cue,” he remarked. Archana responded positively, saying, “Well said, Atlee. You and I are a team now.”

Atlee was joined by Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi during the episode. Baby John, which is produced by Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, and Jyoti Deshpande, features a special appearance by Salman Khan. It is all set to hit theatres on December 25, 2024.

Chinmayi Sripaada responds to Atlee’s reply

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has now weighed in on the issue, criticising Kapil for allegedly making a joke about Atlee’s skin colour. The clip from the episode emerged on social media, following which Kapil has been facing backlash for his remarks. The comedian as well as Atlee are yet to react to the stir.

Reposting a clip from the show, Chinmayi wrote, “Will they never stop these crass and racist jibes at his skin colour in the name of ‘comedy’?” Chinmayi didn’t like the joke either and didn’t mince any words while calling out Kapil. She took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share her views. “Someone with the amount of influence and clout like Kapil Sharma saying something like this is disappointing and unfortunately, not surprising,” she added.

Baby John is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language action thriller film. It has been directed by Kalees and serves as an adaptation of Atlee’s 2016 Tamil film Theri. The film stars Varun Dhawan as the main male lead. Keerthy Suresh will make her Hindi debut and the film also stars Wamiqa Gabbi, Zara Zyanna and Jackie Shroff. It is produced under Jio Studios, Cine1 Studios, Vipin Agnihotri Films and A for Apple Productions.

The film was officially announced in the month of July 2023 under the tentative title VD18. The reason is that this film is Varun’s 18th as the leading actor, and the official title was revealed in February 2024. Principal photography commenced in August 2023. Filming was held in Mumbai and Kerala and wrapped by April 2024. The film has music composed by Thaman S, cinematography handled by Kiran Koushik and editing by Ruben.
